Buying Guide: Key Purchase Considerations
- Propagation medium compatibility: Determine whether you propagate in water, soil, coco coir, rockwool, moss, or LECA. Some products are formulated for universal use, while others excel with specific media.
- Active ingredients and potency: IBA-based products are common and effective; powder forms (like Hormex #8 or #16) allow precise dosing, while liquids offer quick mixing and uniform absorption.
- Plant type and hardness of cuttings: Softwood, semi-hardwood, and hardwood cuttings may require different strengths. For challenging plants, higher potency formulas often yield better results.
- Safety and handling: Powder-based hormones can be messier; liquids tend to be easier to apply but may require careful measurement to avoid over-application.
- Shelf life and storage: Look for shelf-stable options that maintain efficacy over time; store away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Supplemental benefits: Some formulas include natural ingredients (seaweed extract, humic acids) that support overall plant health beyond rooting.
- Support materials: Products offering guides or PDFs can help beginners, providing best practices for cutting preparation, timing, and aftercare.
When choosing a root stimulator, consider your typical plants, propagation style, and how much effort you want to invest in mixing and application. A balanced mix of a reliable rooting hormone and informative guidance can improve success rates for both hobbyists and enthusiasts.
